“Live Eels and Grand Pianos” is both a family memoir and a significant contribution to the social history of the twentieth century. It tells the story of the author's parents, Charlie and Kathy Bradford.
Charlie and Kathy were seriously disabled by Polio when they were young children. Charlie contracted the disease in 1909, when he was three, and Kathy in 1913, when she was ten months old. “Live Eels and Grand Pianos” tells the story of their extraordinary courage in the face of adversity.
In the 1940s the idea of seriously disabled people marrying and raising children was so unusual that the author’s birth was reported in the national Sunday newspapers. This book tells how Charlie and Kathy managed to find work and raise a family, and about the prejudice and hostility they suffered, as well as the kindnesses they encountered and the campaigns that they took part in. It includes over twenty black and white photographs of the author’s family taken between 1920 and 1980.

Live Eels and Grand Pianos eBook Andrew Bradford

Much is written today about Britain's "Nanny State" and how it rewards indolence and insolence. I know that there's abuse of the system, but it's easy to overlook the fact that the "good old days" in England were only good for the wealthy! Those born into working class families faced overwhelming odds, even when they were healthy and hard-working. Those with disabilities or serious health problems were simply written off as not being worthy of help.

This author's story of his parents - both born in the early 1900's into poor, but hard-working families - underlines the plight of those who were trying to help themselves, but with little support from society. Both his parents were disabled by polio and faced discrimination and financial hardships in spite of their intelligence and willingness to work. It wasn't until Franklin Roosevelt (himself a polio victim) was elected President that the United States and Britain began to look for ways to help the disabled become productive people.

This fascinating book is a first-person account of an important and exciting era in modern social history. Kathy and Charlie Bradford didn't just benefit from changing attitudes toward the disabled, they helped make it happen! They bravely challenged narrow-minded attitudes and demanded respect and equal treatment. They were heroes and deserve to be remembered.

This author writes well and clearly and with great humor. His stories of growing up in post-WWII London are charming. I really enjoyed this book.

P.S. The print is unusually small. I had to enlarge the font; then it was fine.

Live Eels and Grand Pianos eBook Andrew Bradford Reviews

I liked the book enough and the writing was done really well. I would definately read the authors books in the future
This was a quick and interesting read. I felt like I was with this family and could sense the love they had. The only thing I didn't care for was the authors use of his parents first names, I found it sad. Overall it was a good read.
An interesting first hand account of growing up with parents physically challenged by polio.

The author kept the story interesting while giving us a little history and information on polio. Lots of anecdotes and glimpses into this time period , the strength and resilience of his parents and his own mixed feelings in dealing with the challenges the family experienced.

I can't recall ever having read anything about polio survivors before. Thanks to the author for sharing this memoir.
