Perhaps the most striking thing about this short story is that a man has written a detailed and vivid description of an abortion and its aftermath. Hughes does an admirable job of entering his main character, Gemma's, head. Others here have said the story has supernatural and moral overtones, and I can certainly agree with that. When Gemma takes a drug prescribed to help her sleep after her procedure, strange things start to happen.Hughes explores the theme of revenge well, and I can clearly understand the protagonist's motivation. It's hard to tell which is more disturbing -- Gemma's recollections of how her lover has hurt her or her hallucinations about what really happened in the clinic. Hughes' complex interweaving of just the right words and images give a chilling effect on the reader, and it makes this tale, indeed, a "dark short" as the name of the series implies.
Clearly a talented and versatile writer. I'll watch for more by him.

This is a wonderful story filled with supernatural and moral overtones. The writing is excellent and moving. Gemma's pain--both physical and spiritual--is evident on every page. A great read.
This book was so well written with such detail. J.D.HUGHES handled a sensitive subject extremely well. A great author. Highly recommend his books.
J. D. Hughes is a writer. Unequivocally, a writer. Mr. Hughes tackles a very difficult topic and makes it into a modern day "Tell Tale Heart." Extremely well written, paced, and ended. And I'm not kidding about the chill. Fabulous!
Love this book. Just what you need when sitting in gridlock traffic or that *#x¤# waiting room. This book makes the Time Fly. You will not regret picking this book up. Another must read.
This is a haunting story about a young woman who has an abortion. It appears to have a pro-life perspective. Moralistic slant aside, it's well-written and has a memorably stange ending.
Very short story. The writing is good; the subject is grim and the male writer has taken a political position on how a woman might react to an abortion.
Great short story, Gemma thought Garreth was special but found out she wasn't quite right about him and now pregnant she finds trying to solve that problem isn't exactly what she thought wither. great feel to the story and great job by the author.
