Oracle, Black Canary, Huntress and Lady Blackhawk all return to Gotham City where they belong - and they've brought a couple of new friends (or are they foes?) along with them!Guest-starring a major Bat-villain and the first appearance of the most dangerous, most twisted new Birds villain ever!
BIRDS OF PREY #1 BRIGHTEST DAY Gail Simone Books
The re-launch of arguably DC Comics' best female-oriented title ever, "Birds of Prey," begins with this issue in June of 2010. Back in action together are the Birds' top operatives: Black Canary, the Huntress, and Lady Blackhawk (Zinda, their ace pilot), with Barbara "Oracle" Gordon guiding them from their new secret lair.Gail Simone's plot begins with a seemingly routine hostage rescue in the Himalayas by Black Canary of a young child abducted by terrorists gone awry (at least, in the media's view). This is the beginning of a promising sub-plot: that heroic violence perpetuated by unsanctioned vigilantes, such as Black Canary, would be called into controversy by the media. Simone treats this topic with serious realism and gives her storyline terrific depth.
Also, the "Brightest Day" resurrection of Hank (Hawk) Hall is briefly reflected here, as he and his new partner, Dove, appear to be the team's next members sometime in the near future. It should be interesting seeing how the original Hawk from Hawk & Dove will mesh teaming up with a younger, more contemporary Dove, who has her hands full keeping Hank's overzealous, brutal tactics in check.
Meanwhile, Oracle summons her best Birds of Prey for a reunion, as they are being targeted by a mysterious adversary with inside information on the secret identities within the super-hero community and their loved ones. Without knowing who their new opponent even is, the Birds must begin a desperate search racing against time. The issue finishes with a surprise villain.
All in all, I give top grades to Gail Simone for resurrecting this title in grand style, and to Ed Benes for his top-notch artwork.
Grade: 5 stars out of 5. For ages 12 and up (for some violent scenes).
